The power of the Kannon is a proof of not changing even if it is a country which makes a mistake in calling it Japan and China. ”

It was a thing that the Kannon prepared all and helped Nichiren’s life.
With the illustration, the scene where the messenger from Kamakura and the messenger from an execution ground met is drawn on Kawa’s opposite shore.
Though regrettable, a messenger on the opposite shore is too small, and since the pattern is contained in the horse, the front messenger cannot call it a beautiful material.

前半(観音経和訓図会/上巻/8)のあらすじは次の通り。「北条定時を中傷した日蓮が辰口で首を切られそうになりました。しかし、処刑人が刀を振り下ろしても斬ることができないばかりか、刀が3つに折れてしまい、立会人は仏の加護だといました。」このあとが挿絵の部分となります。それでは、訳してみます。

「この不可思議な状況を鎌倉に伝え、日蓮聖人の命を助けるべきだという文を書いて早馬で鎌倉に送った。丁度その頃、鎌倉では異常な天候であったため、日蓮の処刑を天が怒っていると思われた。そこで、鎌倉からも日蓮の命を助けるという免状を早馬で送らせた。すると、双方の使者が道中にある川で出会うことができた(この逸話から、この川を待合川と呼ぶようになった)。お互いに届ける文を交換して引き返した。結果、ついに日蓮の命は助かり、法華経を天下に広めることになる。」

「実は、呉の陸暉(りっき)の故事と同じ日の出来事だった。日本と中国という違う国ではあっても、観音のお力は変わらないという証だ。」

観音が全てを整えて、日蓮の命を助けたとのことでした。挿絵では川の対岸に鎌倉からの使者と処刑場からの使者が対面した場面が描かれています。残念ながら対岸の使者は小さすぎ、手前の使者は馬に模様がはいっているため綺麗な素材とは言えません。川の表現は魅力的ですので、表現の参考にするような使い方が良いでしょう。
