「昔、播州三木に孤独で貧しい女性がいた。両親は死没したために残された娘で、少しの畑を作って暮らしてる。ある時、麦畑の中で朽木の仏像を拾う。傷んでいてなんの仏かもわからないが、もったいないと思って家に持ち帰り安置した。その仏像に食事を備えて毎日礼拝していると、この女性の畑の作物が他の人のは畑よりもよく茂った。」
「丁度その頃病が流行していた。この女性も病にかかり、ついには病死してしまう。近隣の者が哀れんで弔おうとし、いよいよ明日は埋葬という晩になる。その夜は死人を守って夜を明かのだが、明け方に死んだはずの女性が「ありがとうございます」と声を発した。皆驚いて、急いで女性を介抱する。」
「生き返った女性が言うには、病死した際に夢の様な感覚で暗い道を歩いていたという。すると、恐ろしい二人の鬼が火の車と共に現れる。鬼が言うには、女性の両親は多くの罪を犯したため未だに地獄で苦しんでいる。娘であるお前も親の罪によって地獄に連れて行く。とのこと。」
「火の車に押込められる寸前、どこからともなく1人の僧侶が現れた。袈裟は破れていたが、尊げな雰囲気を纏っている。鬼に向かって告げる。女性の命運が尽きていないなら助けさせよ、と。鬼達は自分たちの王に伺いをたてた後に、女性を開放して帰って行く。」
「女性は僧侶に家へと送り届けられた。女性が尋ねると、僧侶は自分が観音であり、麦畑の朽ちた仏像が自分だという。仏像を毎日供養し礼拝してくれたので、地獄から救い出したのだ。早く現世に戻り、父母を弔って地獄での苦しみから救ってあげなさい。そして、多くの人に仏道を広めなさい、と。」
「この時、女性が「ありがとうございます」といったのだ。女性は生き返ったことを涙を流して喜んだ」
